Early Pregnancy Scan (Viability Scan)

An Early Pregnancy Scan, also known as a Viability Scan, is an ultrasound performed during the early stages of pregnancy to assess the health and development of the pregnancy. It is typically done between 6 to 8 weeks of gestation and is one of the most effective ways to confirm the presence of a pregnancy, check for a fetal heartbeat, and evaluate other early-stage developments.

Purpose of the Early Pregnancy Viability Scan:

  1. Confirm Pregnancy: The scan confirms that the pregnancy is located in the uterus (as opposed to an ectopic pregnancy) and is progressing normally.
  2. Check Fetal Heartbeat: One of the primary reasons for this scan is to ensure that the fetal heartbeat can be detected. This is a key sign of a viable pregnancy.
  3. Assess Gestational Age: The scan helps to estimate the age of the pregnancy based on the size of the embryo or fetus, which is important for accurate due date predictions.
  4. Detect Multiple Pregnancies: The scan can detect if you're carrying more than one fetus (twins, triplets, etc.).
  5. Examine the Uterus and Ovaries: It can also check the health of the uterus and ovaries, looking for any abnormalities that may require attention.
  6. Identify Issues Early: The scan can help detect early pregnancy complications like missed miscarriage, molar pregnancy, or abnormal fetal development.

Procedure for Early Pregnancy Viability Scan:

  • Transabdominal Ultrasound: This is the most common method where a gel is applied to the abdomen, and a transducer (ultrasound probe) is moved across the abdomen to capture images of the uterus and embryo.

  • Transvaginal Ultrasound: In some cases, particularly in very early pregnancies (before 6 weeks), a transvaginal ultrasound might be recommended. This involves a probe inserted into the vagina for closer examination of the embryo and the uterus.

What to Expect During the Scan:

  • The procedure is non-invasive and typically painless, though you may feel slight pressure if a transvaginal ultrasound is required.
  • The sonographer (ultrasound technician) will apply a gel to your abdomen or insert the probe for a vaginal scan. This gel helps to transmit sound waves, which are then used to create images of the uterus and developing pregnancy.
  • You will be asked to lie down during the scan, and the procedure usually takes about 15 to 30 minutes.

After the Scan:

  • The sonographer will share the images and early findings with you immediately or will forward them to your doctor.
  • Your healthcare provider will review the scan results with you and explain the development of the pregnancy, including the detection of a fetal heartbeat and confirmation of any possible complications.
  • In some cases, further scans may be recommended depending on the findings of the initial scan.

Benefits of the Early Pregnancy Viability Scan:

  • Peace of Mind: Confirming the presence of a heartbeat and the normal development of the pregnancy can provide reassurance, especially in cases of early pregnancy bleeding or prior miscarriage.
  • Accurate Due Date: Helps establish an accurate due date based on the size and development of the fetus.
  • Early Detection of Issues: Identifies potential complications early, allowing for timely intervention if needed.
  • Assessing Multiple Pregnancies: Early detection of twins or multiples, which can affect your care plan moving forward.

When Should You Get the Scan?

The Early Pregnancy Viability Scan is generally scheduled between 6 to 8 weeks after your last menstrual period. If you're unsure of your pregnancy dates or experience irregular cycles, your doctor may recommend scheduling it earlier to confirm the pregnancy's health.

This scan is one of the first steps in monitoring your pregnancy and ensuring both maternal and fetal well-being in the early stages of gestation. It is a simple, effective way to track the health of your pregnancy and provide early insights into any potential issues that may arise.
